Dance Studio Noise Reduction Project

Aloha Dance StudioExcessive echoes inside a Hawaiian dance studio had to be eliminated. AAI Veil  panels corrected the issue so dance classes can be taught in an echo-free environment.

Kapaa_Acoustic_Panels_Up_FrontAloha Dance Studio of Lihue, Hawaii, located on the island of Kauai, has expanded with a second location in the city of Kapaa.  After moving in and opening several classes it was discovered that the room had very bad reverberated noise from the hardwood floor and the mirror wall, along with the other hard walls and ceiling.

Argosy Acoustics was asked for help as a temporary fix while the Director, Miss Tiffany was considering whether the studio  would grow and prosper. with noise as it was. Argosy had panels already in Hawaii from  a previous test  on Oahu  that could be used to help Kauai  Island (Kiki,) kids benefit and that it all would work out.  The panels used were a combination of standard Acoustax 8 foot panels and the other were Veil 10 foot panels with Vail sides.  This allowed us to do the job with less panels and still use what we had.  The full treatment would be all the panels of the same type and make it even better.  It is so much better to design and install a system do exactly what is required.  The panels were installed and the room changed from a highly reverberant, "Noise Soup," mess to a bright room where the music was good and the tap dancers did not hear a lot of noise, yet could hear the instructors.  Conversation was now possible and the terrible, "Noise Soup," echo was gone. The tap sounds were still there, so the teachers could hear who was messing up or needed additional help.  All of this was done using only 3% of the wall area where most absorbent panel installations require 15% of available area or more and don't actually "tune."

The front lobby had a bad echo as well, so we added a Dolce’ Acoustics, “Tiki” panel to just one wall.  The major echos were gone and you could stand in front of the, "Tiki," Panel,  clap and hear it stop the echos. Further improvement will be done with the second panel, when it arrives.  The Dolce’ Panels are unique in the fact that they they remove unwanted sounds and reflect higher frequencies back to make the room pleasant and bright.  Conversation is easy, the music is brighter and the echo is gone.

The Dolce’ Acoustics Panels are produced in several editions depending on requirements. Options of color and materials, artwork, photos result in a look of belonging.  Both the Mark II and Mark III are designed to use in location that require more or less treatment depending on the noise and size of the space, with both an efficient acoustic device yet a beautiful piece of art.

The interesting about this project was as we carried the panels into the room and laid them on the floor we could hear the room change, the echo was gone and "Noise Soup," disappeared.  After hanging the panels, doing the noise testing, (before and after,) we could see and hear the difference.  Not only the noise readings but the computer screen showed what we were looking at and hearing.

The end result was a Dance Studio that works.
